Michael Barrett,


A protégé of Leonard Bernstein and former CEO and General Director of the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts (2003-2012) and Artistic Director of the Tisch Center for the Arts at the 92nd Street Y, Mr. Barrett is also co-founder and associate Artistic Director of the New York Festival of Song and, with his wife, Leslie Tomkins, co-founder and Music Director of the Moab Music Festival of Utah. Mr. Barrett has been a guest conductor with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, and orchestras around the world.  He enjoys the mentoring of younger artists and participated annually in programs at Caramoor, the Juilliard School and recently joined the El Sistema program in Venezueala in a special program of the music of Aaron Copland.
Mr. Barrett was born in Guam and raised in California. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, and received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He did post-graduate work at the Hartt School of Music. He lives in New York City and Moab with his wife, Leslie and 19 year-old daughter Emma.
