Grotto Concert I: Beethoven at 250

Thursday, September 3, 2020 - 11:30am
Colorado River Wilderness Grotto
Pieces:

W.A. Mozart:  Sonata for Piano Four-Hands in C major, K.521

Ludwig van Beethoven:  Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, op. 27 no. 2 (“Moonlight”)

Ludwig van Beethoven:  Sonata for violin and piano, No. 10 in G major, op. 96

Event Description:

Jet-boat down the Colorado River through spectacular red rock canyons to "nature's own concert hall" (The New York Times)- a pristine, acoustically perfect wilderness grotto carved from the surrounding red rocks - to hear performances by the Festival's world-class artists.

To celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday, two masterpieces (by Beethoven) follow Mozart’s charming Sonata for piano 4-hands. The famous “Moonlight” Sonata, and Beethoven’s last Sonata for violin and piano display two sides of Beethoven’s musical range. Mystery and drama are the signature of the “Moonlight”, while gentle lyricism and understated melodic beauty are at the center of the violin sonata.
