Grotto Concert II: Beethoven’s Fire

Wednesday, September 9, 2020 - 11:30am
Colorado River Wilderness Grotto
Pieces:

Robert Schumann: Bilder aus Osten, op. 66

Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata No. 8 in C minor, op. 13 (“Pathétique”)

Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata No. 9 in A major, op. 47 (“Kreutzer”)

Event Description:

Jet-boat down the Colorado River through spectacular red rock canyons to "nature's own concert hall" (The New York Times)- a pristine, acoustically perfect wilderness grotto carved from the surrounding red rocks- to hear performances by the Festival's world-class artists.

Beethoven was known for his fiery temperament, and his passionate musical drama. The “Pathetique” Sonata for solo piano, and the “Kreutzer” Sonata for violin and piano are two examples of Beethoven’s controlled musical rage. Schumann’s rich “Bilder Aus Osten” (Pictures of the East) sets the stage for Beethoven’s fiery music.
