The red rock and sand concert site—and the hike to and from—is MMF Artistic Director Leslie Tomkins’ inspiration for this program of works with a connection to nature. Takemitsu likened his pieces to Japanese gardens, to be admired while strolling, with frequent stops to enjoy the foliage of a tree, a flower, or a distant view. His tranquil work for two violins threads through Beethoven’s quintet masterpiece which ends with one of the best "stormy" finales of the composer’s early years.
