Moab lies in the heart of Southeastern Utah's great Colorado Plateau. It sits on the banks of the Colorado River and is nestled in a valley with precipitous red-rock cliffs on both sides. Moab is home to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, and Dead Horse Point State Park. Surrounded by rugged and beautiful terrain with predominantly desert features, Moab has an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet. Daytime temperatures in August/September hover in the 90’s but can go higher in the late afternoon, cooling considerably at night.
Hiking
Moab is located a short distance from both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. There are extensive hiking trails in these parks as well as trails close to town, including a recommended hike near Powerhouse Lane – Mill Creek Canyon. Maps available in town.
Mountain Biking
Moab is the “mountain biking capital of the world”. Bike rentals and maps are available. Helmets and elbow/wrist guards are recommended.
Equestrian
Backcountry Mules offers mule rides and horses are available at numerous places, including Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge, Sorrel River Ranch Resort Spa, and Pack Creek Ranch.
River Rafting
River trips are readily available. Festival outfitter Bob Jones is owner of Tag-a-Long Expeditions, the largest river expedition company in town. Tag-a-Long Expeditions outfits the Festival’s Grotto Concerts and the Musical Raft Trip through Cataract Canyon.
Swimming
The Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center features a public swimming pool located in Swanny City Park near downtown Moab.
Golf
Moab has a magnificent 18-hole public golf course located a short distance from the center of town. Clubs can be rented at the course.
Tennis
Public tennis courts available at Grand County High School located behind and to the right of City Market on south Main Street. Courts are lighted for evening use.
Moab Fitness Centers
The South Town Gym is located at 1070 S. Hwy 191 in Moab.
The Moab Fitness Center is located at 170 E 100 South in Moab (please ask for information inside Central Utah Insurance office).
Cell phone service is available in Moab (Verizon and Cingular work best) but not at the remote concert venues out of town.
Internet / email: Wireless internet is available in the Festival Office and at a number of locations (Love Muffin, Red Rock Bakery, Eklectica Cafe) in town as well as the Moab Library.
There are many different ways to reach Moab, whose remote location is reason enough to come. Here are your options for traveling here as well as navigating the area once you arrive.
Great Lakes Airlines offers daily flights to Moab through Denver on Beechcraft 1900D, twin engine, turbo prop aircraft. Fares on Great Lakes can be booked as part of an itinerary through Denver. You can book directly at www.flygreatlakes.com or by calling 800.553.5111.
Grand Junction Regional Airport is the closest airport to Moab serviced by several major airlines.
Denver International Airport and Salt Lake City International Airport are Moab’s most convenient large airports with regular service by major airlines.
All major companies available in Grand Junction, Denver and Salt Lake City. Enterprise Car Rental is available in Moab. If you plan to rent a car in Moab, you MUST RESERVE WELL IN ADVANCE.
The drive to Moab is 5-6 hours from the Denver airport (all but the last 40 minutes on I-70), approximately 2 hours from the Grand Junction airport and 4 hours from the Salt Lake City Airport with 2.5 hours on UT Highway 6.
If you chose not to rent a car, there are airport shuttles to Moab from Grand Junction and & Salt Lake City.

Pena Boulevard to I-70 West to Exit 182 (Crescent Junction / Moab) US 191
Turn LEFT onto US-191/ UT-128. Continue on US-191 to Moab.
From Grand Junction Walker Field Airport:
From Airport turn RIGHT on Horizon Drive. Take I-70 West ramp.
I-70 West to Exit 182 (Crescent Junction / Moab) US 191
Turn LEFT onto US-191/ UT-128. Continue on US-191 to Moab.
From Grand Junction Walker Field Airport(Scenic Route):
From Airport turn RIGHT on Horizon Drive. Take I-70 West ramp.
I-70 West to Exit 214 for Cisco (first Cisco Exit).
Turn LEFT to go over the freeway and then RIGHT on the other side. Continue on this
road through and beyond the “ghost” town of Cisco.
Turn LEFT at the intersection with Hwy 128 to Castle Valley and Moab.
This Utah Scenic Byway road parallels the Colorado River through breathtaking scenery.
Turn LEFT onto US-191/ UT-128. Continue to follow US-191 to Moab.
This route takes a little longer to drive but it’s well worth it!
From Salt Lake City:
Merge onto I-215 S.
Merge onto I-15 S via EXIT 12 toward LAS VEGAS.
Merge onto US-6 E via EXIT 258 toward PRICE/ MANTI.
Take the US-191 exit, EXIT 182, toward CRESCENT JCT./ MOAB.
Turn RIGHT onto US-191. Continue to follow US-191 to Moab.
