Singer, drummer/percussionist, and songwriter Nanny Assis has music running through his veins. Born in the northeastern Brazilian city of Salvador in 1969, Nanny began singing in youth choirs at age 10 and immersed himself in the rhythms of traditional Brazilian music under the tutelage of local bandleader Zeca Freitas and conductor Fred Dantas. A master of many styles including Brazilian jazz, forró, bossa nova, and myriad Afro-Brazilian sounds, he has played with amazing artists like Vinicius Cantauria, Kenny Baron, Janis Siegel, Eumir Deodato, and John Patitucci, and performed throughout Europe and the Americas. In New York City, his artistic hub since 1999, Nanny has been featured at such venues at Birdland, Zinc Bar, B.B. King and Blue Note. The 2011 recipient of the prestigious Brazilian International Press Award as “Best Singer of the Year,” he has recorded three albums: Brazilian Vibes with Arthur Lipner, Double Rainbow, and Honey & Air with Janis Siegel.
