NEW this year! The Moab Music Festival presents Winterlude, a week of education outreach and public concerts, featuring internationally acclaimed violinists, Hasse Borup and Kasia Sokol-Borup, Festival founders, Michael Barrett and Leslie Tomkins, and the University of Utah Michie Graduate String Quartet. Our guest artists will lead four days of workshops for the BEACON Afterschool Moab Strings students, perform live at Gallery Moab and on KZMU Community Radio, and conclude with a public concert at Star Hall on Friday, March 4 - tickets free, at the door. All events are FREE with a recommended donation of $10 for the Friday evening concert, all proceeds of which are committed to ongoing teacher training for BEACON Moab Strings teachers. Pieces to be performed include Béla Bartók's String Quartet No. 4 and Robert Schumann's Piano Quintet, Op. 44.

 

 

 

About our Guest Artists:

Hasse Borup, violin - Hasse Borup is Associate Professor in violin and Head of String and Chamber Music Studies at the University of Utah’s School of Music. Previous appointments include The George Washington University and University of Virginia. Borup has performed at The Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna, The Central Conservatory in Beijing, and Nanjing Normal University, as well as in Washington DC, Columbus and Salt Lake City. From 2006-09, Borup directed the Chamber Music Institute at the Music@Menlo Festival in Palo Alto, California. He received his Diploma from the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music, a Graduate Professional Diploma from The Hartt School, and Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from University of Maryland. Borup performs chamber music with various groups such as Washington Musica Viva and the Grand Teton Music Festival.  

Kasia Sokol-Borup, violin - A native of Poland, violinist, Dr. Kasia Sokol-Borup performs solo and chamber music around the United States and Europe. She is the creator and Music Director of the Durango Chamber Music Festival, was Assistant Professor at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado from 2007-2011, Director and Conductor of the Durango Youth Symphony, concertmaster of the San Juan Symphony and a member of the Red Shoe Piano Trio. She has been on faculty of the Conservatory Music in the Mountains since 2008 and is a member of the Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra. 

Michie Graduate String Quartet - Sponsored by the Michie family, the graduate quartet is in its 7th year of exsistence (with revolving personnel). Recent achievements of the quartet include the Grand Prize in the National MTNA Chamber Music Competition (Chicago, 2014) and invitation to the 2015 Saarburg Festspiele (Germany).

The Moab Music Festival and our guest artists host a 4-day workshop for students and teachers of the BEACON Moab Strings program. 

Wednesday, March 2, 7 pm, Gallery Moab Free Concert, 87 North Main St.

Tour Gallery Moab's latest exhibits with Hasse Borup and Kasia Sokol-Borup performing.  

Thursday, March 3, 11 am, KZMU Community Radio 90.1 and 106.7

Hasse Borup and Kasia Sokol-Borup perform live on "Rocket Ship Radio" with host, Serah Mead.

Friday, March 4, 7 pm, Winterlude Concert, Star Hall, 159 E Center St. 

FREE with $10 recommended donation per person at the door. No ticket necessary.
